For some people learning to meditate can take longer than for others. It can be hard for some of us to let go and just be. This short beginner’s guide to meditation will help you get the hang of it so that you can add meditation to your daily practice.

You Can’t Be Wrong

There really isn’t any right or wrong way to meditate. There are best practices, but each person must approach it a little differently based on their personality and ability. Sit in the way you’re most comfortable, not the way you saw someone else do it. You can sit on your bed, on a chair, or on the floor. It’s up to you.

Keep it Short

When you first start a meditation practice, you don’t want to try for an hour. Instead, try for just a couple of minutes. Two minutes of meditation each day is better than zero meditation. As you get more comfortable and learn how to stay centered and comfortable with your posture you can add more time.

First Things First

Anytime you start a new habit it’s always better to get it out of the way first rather than putting it off until later. This is not only true with eating right and exercising it is also true of meditation. Do it either before or after your shower but before you start your day. It’s a great way to get your day started on the right foot in a more relaxed way.

Get in Touch with Yourself

Meditation is a time to get in touch with yourself. As you get into a comfortable seating position check in with yourself to find out how you’re feeling, how your body feels, and whether you have any anxiety or other issues that you need to focus on. Sometimes medication isn’t about clearing your mind, but about focusing in on a problem to find solutions.

Breathe

Once you’re sitting comfortably, start to focus on your breath. The best way to do this is to try counting your breaths. One for breathing in, two for breathing out. How you breathe depends on you. Some prefer to inhale through their nose, and out their mouth. Others inhale and exhale out their nose. Do what is easiest for you depending on your own health and situation. The important part is to regulate your breathing in a way that is comfortable for you.

Let Love Shine Through

Some people like to think of or recite a mantra to help them focus. It’s up to you how you do this but the best thing to do is to focus on love. Think about releasing yourself in a loving way from pain, unhappiness, and other issues so that you can focus on living peacefully as you breathe in and out in a regular and comfortable way.

There is a myth that meditation is supposed to always be peaceful. But, that’s not true. If you’re having harsh experience in life, or those you love are, it’s normal for those things to cross your mind as you meditate. It’s okay because sometimes you do need to focus in on those thoughts in a calm way without trying to fix anything. Just focus on your breath and being during meditation times.
